Russian cyber attackers make $4 million in 5 months

A recently discovered ransomware known as Ryuk has been targeting businesses and has made $4 mill since August 2018. It has been affecting all businesses not just vulnerable ones but has mainly been targeting larger business with more to lose. It makes its way on to system after infecting it with TrickBot. The ransomware would typically infect systems up to months before the ransomware was installed which allowed the attackers to perform network reconnaissance. This period would allow for attackers to find vulnerabilities in the systems and exploit them. They have made $3.7 million in 52 transactions since August. It is not the first ransomware to use such methods. Ryuk has also been compared to Hermes which was found to originate from North Korea leading to people believing that they are behind these attacks. However, the most believed theory is that the attackers can be found in Russia although their identity and location remains unknown. If you feel unsure of your IT security talk to us.
