You may be concerned to hear the news about TalkTalk being the victims of a “Cyber Attack”. Thousands of customer records may have been stolen, including bank and credit card details.
We are fascinated to see the spin that TalkTalk are the victims. Actually, the end users, you the customers are the victims, becasue your personal information has been stolen from a business who should have had the necessary procedures in place to stop the possibility of this happening.
What should you do?
As soon as possible – change your TalkTalk password. Their website is currently not available, when it is, do this immediately. Make sure it IS the TalkTalk website you are using when it comes back up. It will be busy so be patient.
MORE IMPORTANTLY – if you use the same password for other web logins – change those NOW. E.g. Ebay, Amazon, Tesco, other memberships, etc. Use different passwords for each and consider using a password manager such as dashlane or lastpass (see https://www.dashlane.com/ / or https://lastpass.com/) and not a paper record.
Finally, be aware and use your common sense if contacted by email and it wouldn’t hurt to keep a close eye on bank and credit card accounts – but we all do that anyway don’t we?! The biggest risk we currently see is criminals impersonating customers using the stolen data.
